Yesterday, on what was the hottest day of the year so far, my friend Jones and I took a road trip to Kingsgate beach on the Kent coast in a car packed with swimsuits and wigs. Inspired by both the Roxy Music album cover and gorgeous Herb Ritts images of buff models frolicking in the sand I wanted to create some summer photos with Jones as my model. Being a personal trainer (albeit one with a weakness for cake and cocktails) she showed only a flicker of fear when I brought out a tiny bikini, a pair of nude control pants and some netting.
The beach itself was lovely, with deep, soft and very hot sand. Steep white cliffs surround it and one cliff edge is dominated by Kingsgate Castle, built by Lord Holland in 1760. We entertained the few other people on the beach with our antics, especially as I made Jones crawl around in the thick layer of black…
